The debian/testing/amd64 build might work better for you. If you still have a problem, please post a bug report. I quickly looked and didn't see the cause.

Initial Comment:
In XP pd-ext 0.43 (build from yesterday), I get audio problems: trying to run with asio (as I always do with 0.42), the audio is very noisy. It sounds as if the audio isn't synced to the system card, or something. The sinus in the audio test patch has lots of irregular clicks, almost as if they would be dropouts.
This is with asio. With standard audio (MMIO) the result is much worse, but similar. Sometimes it sends messages as "can't synch audio".
Audio options are -asio -audioindev 2 -audiooutdev 2 -channels 2 -midiindev 1 -midioutdev 1 -audiobuf 40, and they always worked with previous versions of pd-ext.

There are few parallels to be made from teamwork of developers, especially
nowadays. The problems solved by computers are of a different nature than
those solved by those who program them. Problems tend to separate in two
wildly different parts : the part that the computer does ; and the part of
figuring out what the computer should be doing.

Often, the interactions between 2 people (or a few people) make a boost

Wait a minute, do you mean that the first 3 developers didn't design their
programme into components in the first place ? What's a « component »
here ?

But also, projects are not all created equal, components aren't created
equal, teams are not created equal, and developers are all different from
each other. It's hard to find something general to say about projects in
general (though it's easy to pretend to have found something).

So, wild claims about 10 people not being better than 3 is some kind of
fiction. I mean that although there are surely many cases in which it
would be true, it largely depends on who you pick, in which kind of
project, that has been structured in which way.

It was already like that since the first version of pd ever, over 15 years
ago. It's misleading to write it in the same paragraph as « the pd-gui
side of Pd has been re-written from scratch ». You also don't state which
part of the pd-gui has been rewritten from scratch, which obscures the
fact that a large fraction of it hasn't been rewritten.

It's a bad idea to take credit for things that Miller had already done or
that his contributors had done.

If you want to say, for example, that pd-extended 43 fixes a certain cause
of hiccups due to bad sync between the two parts of pd, then you can say
it like that, more or less, but a goal to keeping explanations simple
doesn't entitle you to say what you have said.

sorry I'm submitting this again because the original got closed and I never responded... and im running into the same problem.

The problem here is specifically in extended which is packaged with both list-abs and rtc. Many of the help patches break (also the abs) because there is no pointer to the list-abs (import, declare, [list-abs/list-whatever])....

Right now in extended rtc is pretty useless because an rtc abstraction can not be used because many depend on list-abs yet the list-abs library is not declared.

I suggest all abs be changes so anything using [list-abs] is written [list-abs/list-whatever]

attached is screenshot from fresh pd-extended install....help-browser->rtc->serial-help.pd (for example)

when an object is destroyed (either directly deleted or
by closing the patch containing it) the "free" method
(a "destructor" in c++-speak) for this object is called.

however, when pd is "quit" (e.g. "Ctrl-Q"), this
destructor does not get called, which potentially
leaves the system in a bad state.

the attached patch fixes this by adding a
"glob_closeall()" function to g_editor.c (which closes
all root canvases) and calling it from within
glob_quit() in s_inter.c

i can't think of any.

iirc, miller mentioned something along the lines, that calling all those
destructors during an emergency shutdown might just take too long during a
performance. (otoh, if a network port is blocked due to not properly
cleaning up, this might take even longer)

hopefully, if the inclusion in Pd-extended can show that there is no
problem (which i believe), we could get it into Pd-proper.

I think there's a problem in this patch when traversing the canvas list
with
canvases vanishing meanwhile. It should be more like:

[PD-announce] new editing features of Pd-extended 0.43, now in beta!

The Pd-extended 0.43 release has been brewing an extra long time, about 18 months now, mostly because there are lots of big improvements, and we wanted to make sure we got it right, so your patches all work, but the improvements all shine. Its now solidly beta, so we're looking for testers. Download a nightly build to try here:

First off, the pd-gui side of Pd has been re-written from scratch. When you run Pd, you are actually running two programs: pd is the core engine and pd-gui is the GUI. Since basically all computers now come with multiple CPU cores, this means that pd-gui will usually run on a separate CPU core than pd, so they don't step on each other's toes. pd can entirely take over its own core. If you want to make your patch use more CPU cores, then check out the [pd~] object introduced in the last release (0.42.5).

pd still handles some of the GUI stuff, but we are working on splitting that out for the 0.44 release. That is a big chunk of work but it will also bring big gains. In particular, it means that it will be possible for people to write their own GUIs for Pd, covering not just the display of the patch, but also the editing, and everything else. You like OpenFrameworks, python, iOS, JUCE, Qt, etc.? Write your own pd-gui using the toolkit of your choice. That's the idea at least. That will take a solid chunk of work, so we are looking for people to join that effort.

There are so many ideas for making a better editing experience in Pd, this release makes big strides to address the editing experience. There are new features like Magic Glass, Autotips, Autopatch and Perf Mode, all available on the Edit menu.

• Magic Glass let's you magically see the messages as they pass through the cords. Just turn it on and hover above a cord, and you'll see the messages as they go by. You can even look at signal/audio cords.

• Autotips gives you tips about what an object does, what its inlet expects, and what comes out of the outlets.

• Autopatch mode automatically connects objects as you create them.

• Perf Mode, is a mode for performance that makes it harder to accidentally close windows that are part of your performance.

The Pd Window is also majorly overhauled. First of all, its fast. Much much faster than the old one. You can now print thousands of messages per second to the Pd Window and still edit your patch. No more will an accidental dump of info cause the GUI to freeze up (well, ok, maybe if you send 10,000 messages/second but that is a way too many). There are also now 5 levels of printing messages to the Pd Window: fatal, error, normal, debug, all. If you are only interested in fatal errors, switch the Pd Window to 0 – fatal, and you'll only see the worst problems. You want to see every single message to debug? Switch to 4 – all, and you'll get the whole firehose.

There is also the new log library, which lets you easily send messages for those different levels. And all messages logged with the objects from the log library are clickable: when you Ctrl-Click or Cmd-click (Mac OS X) on the line in the Pd Window, it'll pop up the patch where the message came from, and highlight the specific object that printed it. That even works for many messages from other objects as well.

The Pd Window also includes very basic level meters for monitoring the input and output levels. And for those who want to play with the GUI in realtime, you can type Tcl code in the Tcl entry field, and directly modify and probe the running GUI.

One thing that you can do now is customize the GUI using GUI plugins. You can change all sorts of colors, some fonts, and many behaviors. Want to create a new object when you triple-click? Try the tripleclick example plugin Want to make the patch cords disappear when you leave Edit Mode? Check out the "only show cords in edit mode" example. Those are the simple ones. There is also Tab Completion, a search engine for the docs, a category browser for the right-click menu, a buttonbar for creating objects, and more.

You can find many GUI plugins in the new section of the downloads page as well as documentation for making your own. What kind of GUI plugin will write?

[PD-announce] Xth Sense at finals of Guthman Musical Instrument Competition US

Dear all,

I'm at the airport about to fly to Atlanta for the Guthman Competition.
It's pretty exciting, the finals will take place tomorrow and the day after at Georgia Tech.

I'm performing with the Xth Sense [2], a free and open H/S biophysical framework for musical performance, completely Linux/Pd-based, which I'm developing since March 2011.
Somebody of you might remember it from the recent PdCon.

Our friend and peer Jaime Oliver was awarded the first prize at this same competition with his wonderful Silent Drum [2].

I wouldn't have known that from your reply. It seemed to just continue
where you had left. When I want to just add more to something I said, I
just reply to my own mail. I don't quote someone's mail to say something

Part of the computing power has to be put on communication and
coordination, which are essential parts of collaboration. It doesn't
necessarily mean that those ressources could have been used for anything
else. If you measure a programme's computing time without counting its
I/O, it'll appear more efficient than if you counted the I/O. For
multi-processor computing involving divide-and-conquer or pipelining, some
of the work internal to the algorithm is I/O and you can't avoid measuring
it. This might skew perception a bit.

Yes, I was stating the other side, because there hadn't been any
clarifications on what « the sum » and « the parts » ought to be in that
case. People compare total amounts of gigaflops because they can, and
because it's fairly simple to measure a score to determine a winner,
which leads to competitions that take a lot of time and effort. This
orients a lot of the default thinking about what is « the » goal of
parallelism.

I also do that a lot. If I had kept them, I could make a book out of them,
and store it in a random position in the Library of Babel.

Even if one doesn't need to actually change them at any time, being able to set them at runtime through inlets is absolutely necessary if one wants them to be computed as a function of some of the containing patch's creation arguments.

At least untill we will be able to write expressions in creation arguments that would be evaluated at creation time. (but even then, we won't be able to write _programs_ in creation arguments!)

Imagine for example you want to make an abstraction that computes the amplitude of the signal and takes an approximate RATE (analysis per second) as creation argument. You just can't.

@executable_path is a variable, you just literally use that string, and the OS will replace it with the path to the executable of the program that's loading the dylib. Basically, that's /Applications/Pd-extended/Contents/Resources/bin.

Then there is @loader_path, which I think is more useful. That's the path that a given dylib is being loaded from, so in the case of gridflow.pd_darwin that would be replaced with ~/Library/Pd, or /Library/Pd or whatever.

You just always lose on efficiency whenever you use several threads or
multiple nodes. Best case is "less than or equal" to the sum of its
parts, and equal only when all the things you want to do are
independent.

It's easy to see that potential for doing fast calculations building a
cluster... and then get disappointed to see how much of it gets
wasted. Look at that: a user just put 64 threads on one node and it
spends all its time switching contexts. erm... the /home filesystem
is where one user was just trying to write 500 output files at once,
and no one has been able to login for hours.

I'll go back to wasting my time, and see if I can make it parallel ;)

I checked again on Windows XP to understand why it is working there, but
I forgot that I was never able to run a recent 0.43 Pd version on this
box (I mentioned this before; I guess the switch was also between
0.43.1test4 and 0.43.1test5). However, the mentioned file is missing
here as well, so no, there is _no_ strange unzip-thingy going on.
However, I overlooked that the allegedly missing file actually is
bundled, but at a different location: <pd-install>\bin\tclreg12.dll.

Yo, although I don't really have a clue which file is supposed to be
located where, I was still able to help at a least a little bit.

Earlier pd locked up opening a patch on first run, did not load patch and window went blank, later the patch did load but locked up wile editing. A previous install locked up while playing, guis stopped updating graphics but sliders still sent values while audio playing.

This error could be from adding other sources for installation to package manager. Yesterday I installed the pd-dev and compiled ggee ten ununstalled vanilla and extended anf reinstalled puredata from ubuntu software center. Today I tried to compile cyclone and compiler haulted because of missing dev package but the headers were still there. tried to get dev package again and operation haulted because of dependencies not being fetched. Noticed jackd2 is dummy placeolder.

It seems the file that it complains about (tclreg12.dll) seems simply

Miller,

Just a thought, I think DLLs built with MinGW don't always get along
with programs built with MSVC. If Tcl/Tk you include was built with
MSVC and the tclreg12.dll was built with MinGW, it might cause a problem
like this.

About motex, the code is largely the same, with some bugfixes here and there, and the layout is restructured following the Library Template:

C++ reserved keywords are easy to deal with. They're easy to
search-and-replace, or #define away. Some other things are a bit more
work, but that's quite tiny compared to most other cases of «translating»
between very similar programming languages.

In the eighties, people spent a LOT more time porting software from one
version of Microsoft BASIC to another version of Microsoft BASIC that was
incompatible simply because it was on a different computer brand.

Well, a good reason to «object» to that is simply that C++11
implementations are not ready for use, and even if they were, they'd be so
new that they wouldn't be bundled with Ubuntu, Debian, Fink, MinGW nor
XCode.

Apart from the fact that this feature will not really cure the problem and
will create new ones.

I just downloaded gridflow-9.13-macosx104-i386.tar.gz and it was looking for libpng12 at @executable_path/../../lib/libpng.12.0.dylib.

GridFlow 9.13 binaries for OSX already comes with libpng12.dylib.

GridFlow 9.13 source is slightly older, and doesn't include some fixes
that I made when I built the binary package.

I should really, really release the 9.14 source...

It's been like that in SVN for no less than 12 months.

I also vaguely remember trying to compile with libpng14 at first, but that
must have been an older story... I don't remember what had gone wrong. It

I just tried loading gridflow 9.13 on Pd-extended 0.43 on Mac OS X 10.6.8, and it couldn't load because it was looking for libpng12.0.dylib inside of Pd-extended. The included dylibs are automatically included based on what the included objects are linked to, so they are not good to rely on, because they can change in a given version.

So you can easily include libpng12.0.dylib in your gridflow package, here's how:

i just found out that the patchage GUI, which is minimal, but really pretty and user friendly, now has an OS X version:

download the Testing version - 0.5.0 does not display text properly on OS X.

Could be a useful replacement for the JackOSX connection manager for now. This is actually the kind of UI i wish JackPilot could have.

In my first very simple test it worked fine, except my coreaudio system died when i shut jack down without closing patchage and i had to reboot the machine. But the machine hadn't rebooted for about a week at that point and had been doing various different audio-related things all the time, so not sure if that's a good indication. We'll see if that happens again…

I just received the message below from Hans-Christoph inviting me to
maintain "motex" - a collection of externals that I wrote over 10 years
ago. I wasn't the one that originally placed motex on the repository
(thanks, to whoever did) - but yes I'd be happy to maintain it.

So - I'd like to request SVNCommitAccess and have just registered with
sourceforge with the username: motex.

If SVNCommitAccess can be given, please direct me to any necessary
guides or other information. I had a brief look at this page:

Can't promise that there will be many new additions to the collection -
but I will take a look sometime soon and give it a tidy-up at least.

My background with Pd: I've been using Pd on and off since about 1999
for installation projects (see: www.reverberant.com) - I'm also
perpetually forgetting how to use it! I can still program a little in C
although it has been a while. I use Linux. At the moment I don't have
access to a windows compiler.

Excellent. There are now three contributors to this translation: Cyrille
Henry started it, Alexandre Castonguay worked on it, and now you're number
three. I think the three of you should work out how y'all want to
collaborate on it. Using transifex makes it easy, but you could also just
email each other the files, or whatever you want.

I found others later ; but i didn't want to use them as i can not test the

thanks for the submission! There are a couple versions of the french
translation for Pd, could you tell me which one you started with? The one
in pd-vanilla is not as up-to-date as the one in Pd-extended, so if yours
is based on of Pd-vanilla's, then it would make sense to merge the
Pd-extended version with yours to have a fully up-to-date French
translation.

[PD-announce] PD externals with Faust Online Compiler

Hi,

We have recently redesigned the Faust website (http://faust.grame.fr) and its online compiler (http://faust.grame.fr/index.php/online-examples). It is now possible to generate Pure Data externals for Linux, Mac OSX and Windows.

Here is how to proceed :
- click on "online examples" in the main menu
- (the first visit you have an help window, close it).
- choose an example in the catalog, for instance Synthesizers/karplus32
- (customize the faust code to your needs)
- click on tab "C++ code"
- select "puredata" in the architecture menu
- click on tab "Exec File" (can take several seconds to compile the code)
- and then press the download button and unzip the content somewhere in your PD path.

If you are using Firefox or Chrome you can directly drag and drop faust files from your desktop to compile them. You can also upload your own examples in the user sections to share them.

If you have problems let me know...

another reason is, that with accessor-functions you can more easily stay
binary compatible both backward and forward than with directly accessing
the struct.
sure you can do something like that with structs as well (typecast to
different structs depending on the version of the Pd-host), but with
accessors it comes for free (well, at least backwards compatibility)

i guess i was exaggerating the use of C++ reserved keywords as variable
names and the like.
sure, this is easy to fix.
but the original suggestion sounded to me like: 'a solution for all our
problems is to switch to new C++ features in a "CC=g++ -fdo-what-i-want"
manner', and i wanted to object to that.

Now that I think of it, they can't. I momentarily forgot something
obvious.

This is because Pd's symtable is like an old LISP's symtable : the
symtable isn't just a mapper of const char[] to t_symbol *, it's also
giving you access to s_thing, which is the mechanism for naming [table],
[value], [delwrite~], [receive], [send~], [catch~], and some more.

In some other systems (Smalltalk, Ruby, etc), the symtable is just a set
of permanent strings, and there are various vartables to hold the mappings
of t_symbol * to t_pd * (I'm translating this in pd terminology). Nearly
all languages have such a system because it allows them to avoid having to
turn $0-myname into 1234-myname just to be able to read a puny local
variable.

can't share gensym and its static table with any other instance, because
you can't ask all callers of gensym to do the locking on gensym. You can't

Sharing gensym is useful so that one can prepare lists and messages
without having to lock everytime. This can allow to run the audio thread

Or just structs. You'd have a t_pdglobal type containing all the global
variables that should never be shared.

And a separate section of the same struct could also list the global

how many of these variables are there ? That could be a lot of variables
to be swapped around.

I did. I don't recall significant difficulties... it might have been just
the need to explicitly cast float to int, and something else involving
void pointers... the job of making it compile with C++ wasn't a portion
worth mentioning of the project I was working on (less than 1 %).

It took less time than just getting rid of all of pd's unused variables
just so that I could see my own mistakes easily.

Even when you do have control over threading, as on Android, you have
several reasons to want to split your app in several parts and have them
communicate and that means either being able to call pd functions from any
thread or inventing elaborate workarounds.

This means I'd have to switch threads every time I want to send a message
to pd. In my app, I have a main thread, and I have a pd-audio thread. The
message-domain stuff currently runs in the main thread. I use either
sys_lock or I switch to using a lock that's actually reentrant. This is
easier than switching threads.

Alternately, message-passing can happen using «mailboxes», but that's more
complicated, and it means not being able to get an answer from pd right
now, because it's async.

AFAIK, this standard in general is hardly supported at the moment, not
just the thread_local keyword, and I'd rather have Pd's source start using
C++83 features before it starts getting into C++11 land.

I'd rather have you put a separate lock inside gensym so that we don't
have to call sys_lock and sys_unlock just for that. Then that hashtable
can be shared between instances, in nearly all situations. Saves some RAM
too.

You don't need multiple copies of the cos-table, and you won't ever need.

Why is it normal to have one thread per plug-in ? As someone who doesn't
know VST, this seems weird. Think of Pd as being a plugin interface of its
own. Pd can schedule all of its plugins in the same thread and it's not a
problem for working patches. It might be just some kind of
infinite-loop-protection (a feature that Pd doesn't have).

This code has totally changed, check master in pd-extended.git for the current code. The new code fixed this bug, and seems faster than the old code to boot.

I know that sys_gui doesn't enforce it, but that's not what I'm trying to
say. I'm saying that it would be good if sys_gui could send extra data
such as \0 terminators or size-of-upcoming command so that you don't need
to run [info complete] at all in the tcl process.

A TCP connection doesn't have actual breaks. This means that if you want
breaks, you have to add them. Currently, the breaks have to be guessed by
a combination of parsing and supposing that the OS's breaks will
eventually match an end-of-statement before the RAM starts swapping or
before the CPU goes quadratic. That's why I'm thinking about less implicit
ways of ending statements.

And there are several ways to fix that, and I was speculating about one
that we aren't usually thinking about, but that might save the effort of
running [info complete] multiple times on the same data and any other
kludges we have to combine it with so that [info complete] does the job,
and other funny side-effects of an [info complete]-based strategy...

This most probably has to do with the size of the buffers in the TCP
lasagna of the Linux kernel or OSX kernel. Each OS has its own sizes, and
in some of them, it's tunable, if you know how (either by playing with
/proc or /sys, or by recompiling something with a modified config.h, if
you're not lucky).

A direct pipe (the pipe() command, no port number ; or a /tmp socket-file)
has usually a different buffer size, iirc. In any case, you can't really
rely on the buffer size being anything in particular, but the way it is
now, it may affect Pd, especially in certain tough situations.

Yeah, [fconfigure -buffering] is FOR OUTPUT ONLY. (If I said anything
else, it's a mistake). However, [fconfigure -buffersize] controls the size
of both the input and output buffers.

An input buffer is always required for using [gets], but is not when using
[read]. This is because it's extremely inefficient to look for a newline
when the OS doesn't allow you to «unread» data. I'm talking about
user-space buffers (the OS does the buffering it wants to have, but you
don't have direct access to it).

The thing with the \\ is that it's not sufficient, because you also have
to count the braces, and braces can be backslashed. (This corresponds to a
mistake that I made in a previous mail.)

the attached patch is with succesive bangs supposed to loop through a series of 0 to 4 and then start again.

however the reset doesn't work.
the outlet of the [+ 1] shows this pattern: 1, 2, 3, 4, 0 5, 0 6, 0 7
when you 'change' the 5 of the [moses 5] into a 5, the reset starts having effect.
''changing' the 5 again causes no change anymore.
however, deleting the connection between the outlet of the [f ] and the inlet of the [+ 1] and then reconnect them, invokes the bad behavior again.

(the print's in the patch are just htere to make things visible)

i had already experienced that using the [f ] x [+ 1] construction with a direct connection is asking for troubles,
but this behavior seems to me a bug.

[PD-dev] jack driver issues with 0.43

Hi all

When employing dynamic patching, in particular when doing dynamic
patching with ~-objects, I found that drop-out time can be greatly
reduced by turning dsp off during dynamic creation time. I used to turn
dsp off and on in 0 logical time a lot in my patches and it never seemed
an issue.

Recently, I found that when doing so it causes a drop-out, no matter if
there is dynamic patching going on or not. I figured out, that this
happens only when Pd is using jack as the audio back-end. In gdb, I
noticed that when ever I turn dsp off, I get those messages:

When turning dsp on again, I get:

It seems, that since 0.43 - when using jack - turning dsp off and on
cannot be done "silently" anymore. For me, this has a few implications:

* I certainly get a drop-out in the audio stream. Starting and stopping
dsp costs a lot of time now.

* The jack-client 'pure_data_X' disappears when turning dsp off and thus
it looses all hand-made connections to other applications.

* Often, Pd hangs after a few cycles of turning dsp off/on. Pd-gui
doesn't respond on any input and I see the 'watchdog signaling Pd'
message appearing.

Personally, I find the old no-thread-spawning-on-dsp-on implementation
much friendlier in many ways, but to me most importantly, it was able to
avoid drop-outs when turning dsp off and on in 0 logical time.

What do others thing, what is their experience? Is there any chance of
going back to the old way of using Pd with jack?

BTW: Everything works still nice with ALSA.

A call for telematic performances for Deep Wireless Festival X, 1 May 2012

We are looking for individuals and ensembles from around the world to perform over the Internet on May 1^st 2012 as part of the 10^th anniversary of Deep Wireless, organized by New Adventures in Sound Art (Toronto).

The performances will be part of a webcasted six-hour-long, worldwide jam session, which will be coordinated from the music department at Concordia University in Montreal.

Performers are invited from everywhere around the world, as long as they have access to high-speed broadband Internet and do not mind performing at potentially strange hours of the day (or night).

Additionally, for a collaborative telematic piece titled "Hug the world," proposals are particularly encouraged from Asia, Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand, and as far north and south in the globe as possible.

The programming theme for Deep Wireless 2012 is Freedom and we ask participants to consider what that means from their cultural and artistic perspective.

Experience with telematics is not required!

The 0.90 ? yes, it will allows the "JackRouter cannot be selected as default audio in/out" issue.

I have no technical background but am an ex-sound engineer and whatever the math quoted the result is stunning and it's not just me- others I play the tracks too are similarly impressed - the only obvious setting Change with Jack is Hog mode which makes a noticeable difference in the other software mentioned ie Fidelia.
So maybe the Jack difference is minimal but I definitely notice it.
May I suggest the bit is bit borders on myth in this context as bits have to be read usually by a laser hence the concept of error correction. My thought re flash drives which may be erroneous was that there are no lasers involved?
I don't question your obvious expertise but I would recommend at least trying this as it put a big smile on my face -and I only used to tolerate vinyl!

In order to have objects like readanysf~ and purest_json work on Windows, they need to include DLLs for libraries like ffmpeg and curl. In order for the DLLs of the objects to load other DLLs from that same folder, SetDllDirectory() needs to be set first. This requires a minimum of Windows XP SP1 (10 years old at this point).

There are three patches included, the first sets up the new build system for this, the second sets up makefile.mingw for this. The third is the actual change to s_loader.c. I think MSVC sets WINVER automatically, but just be sure its set to 0x0502 for this to work.
